Levels of exegesis for biblical interpretation
-Hermeneutics: the art or theology of biblical interpretation
-Exegesis: the careful, systematic study of the scripture to discover the original, intended meaning
Hermeneutical circle:
- Canonical Context
-Historical Context
-Literary Context
-Narrative Context
-Redemptive-Historical Context (Biblical Context)
-Meaning of the Text
-Historical-
-At this level one takes into consideration the historical setting of the passage in question
-Such issues as the historical context, geographical setting, cultural milieu, and political factors of the works setting are all taken into consideration
*people expected jesus to be a strong military leader...a king to overthrow all other kings...but that is what people expected at that time in history.*
-Literary-
-The litarary context analyzes the genre of the text in particular
-Genre analysis (i.e. poetry, narritice, appocalyptic) is extremely imporant to proper exegetical methodology
-One must understand the type on text/genre that is being examined in order to properly exegate
*Daniel, Ezekial, and Revelation are apocalyptic books...NOT LITERAL AT ALL (figurative, illusion, imagery)*
-Narrative-
-The narrative context is a careful analysis of the text
-It examines such things as settings, context, characterixationm plot, theme, conflict (if any), key words
*Jesus re-lives oldtestament israelites life...40 years in the wilderness after the exodus...then jesus goes out to be tempted in the wilderness..nbut he undoes it...they sin in the wilderness...he triumphs...etc...God lead the people into the wilderness..the holy spirit LEAD jesus into the wilderness to be tempted..after the 40 years....they go into canaan...into the physical kingdome...after 40 days jesus is baptised and declares God's kingdome to be coming/here*
-Redemptive-Historical-
-This level recognizes the resent work within its redemptive-historical context
-Redepmtive-history is simply the history, or story, of God's plan of redemption
-Thus at this level one takes into careful consideration all that has come to pass thus far in the bibical story of redemotion, and all that will come after, according to the rest of the canon of Scripture.
*old testament LEADS to Jesus...it promises it and you shouldnt be surprised about the things Jesus is saying and doing You have to understand the old testament before you can even begin to udnerstand the new because they are linking and the old testament lead to the new and everything unfolded in the old testament first.*
*jews are chosen people because from them comes Jesus Christ...they dont just get a free ticket to heaven*
*Revelation and Genesis linked massively. The garden of eden comes back up in Revelation. it all works together*
-Meaning-
-After all these contexts have been carfeully examined and questioned, one should be able to arrive at the meaning of a text.
-In order to arrive at this meaning, one must take into carful consideration the canonical, historical, literary, narrative, and redemptive-historical contexts in order to arrive at the proper "exegetical meaning" of a text, or ...the author's intended meaning.
*the church is the true and new israel..the chosen and saved...the believers*
