Biblical Writing and History
-the NT writers emphasize continuity between Jesus' story and the OT
-they do this by referencing the OT, either directly or by allusion
-the author assumes that his readers know this story intimately
-herein lies out problem...we do not know history

Old Testament History

-Creation (gen 1)
-Fall (gen 3)
-Abraham/Isaac/Jacob/Joseph (gen 11-50)
-Moses/Exodus (exodus-deuteronomy) 1446 BC <-- date of the exodus
-Entance into promised land aka canaan (joshua)
-The judges (judges-esther)
*2 Corinthians 5:17 (if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation...) paul talks about new creation....relates back to gen 1.*
*Gen 4-10 noah, life after strayed from garden etc*
*by the end of judges....monarchy=1 and 2 Samuel*

-Monarchy (1 and 2 Samuel; 1 and 2 Kings)
-The hugh point of this period is under David/Solomon
-Divided Kingdon (1 and 2 Chronicles)
-Northern Kingdom: Israel/Samaria (rest of the sons of israel(10))
-Destroyed:722 BC (by assyrians)
-Assyrians make israelites breed with their men=samaritan (half-breeds) and the kids lose their original heritage
-Assyrians either kill all or you let us live here and we take your wives and breed...basically
-Southern Kingdom: Judah (Judah & Benjamin)
-Destroyed:586 BC (by babylonians)
-rape and killing of women and then killing children
-they destroy everything, towns, buildings etc. including destorying the great temple built by Solomon
-722BC
-Assyria sweeps down from the Borth and conquers Israel (the Northern Kingdom: 2 Kings 17:6-7, 24-41)
-Prophets of the Northern Kingdom: Isaiah, Amos, Hosea, Micah, Jonah

-586 BC
-Babylonians destroy temple, carry a small remnant of Judah away to Babylon (the Southern Kingdom: 2 Kings 25:1-12
-Prophets of the Southern Kingdom: Jeremiah, Zephaniah, Nahum, Ezekial, Habbakkuk. (daniel and Jeremiah are captured and come back to babylon with them so they are the ones who have stories in their books having to do with the horrid events etc.)


-Judah is in exile for approximately 70 years
-The decree of Cyrus issued roughly in 538 BC
-At this point the people of Israel begin to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple (thus, "Second Temple Judaism")
-Cyrus the Persian conquered Babylon in october 539 and reigned over Persia from 550-530
-Post-exilic prophets: Nehemiah, Ezra, Haggai, Zechariah, Obadiah, and Malachi.
-the decree allowed to remaining judah people to go back and rebuild things...to go home

Intertestamental Period

-Malachi is the last prophet to write (ca. 432-425 BC)
-thus begins 400 years of biblical silence
-But this is not to say that there is nothing important going on in the world
-In the 4th century BC Alexander the Great (356-323) rose to power
-Through several military campaigns Alexander conquered the Mediterranean world
-Alexander not only spread his political power, but also the Greek culture to all the lands he conquered (now everyone knows greek because thats the language of business etc along with your own normal language.)
*Galations 4:4 now that the world is ready, because we have one language world society, the time is right...now Jesus can come...for a world wide evangelisation*
*every portion of the NT is written in greek*
*the Bible is a story about how the believers are save not how the jews are saved.*
