Redemptive History: The unfolding of God's plan of salvation in history

Typology: Special type of symbolism employed by scripture, especially in the OT. More specifically, a type in scripture is a person or thing in the Old which foreshadows a person or thing in the New.

-Does scripture give us warrant to read the Biblie in the manner?
-The answer must be yes, for the scripture supplies its own hermeneutic for us in...
-Luke 24
-"Unfolding"
-Progressive; there is a sense of development in the history of revelation
-its not everything at once
-"It [revelation] has not completed itself in one exhaustive act, but unfolded itself in a long series of successive acts."
-There is a sense of organic development.
-"The organic progress is from seed-form to the attainment of full growth; yet we do not say that in the qualitative
sense the seed is less perfect than the tree. The feature in question exaplins further how the soteric sufficiency of the
truth could belong to it in its first state of emergence: in the seed-form the minimum of indispensable knowledge

-gen 3:(14-)15: the gospel first shown...in its smallest form...right before adam and eve are going to be kicked out. It promises Jesus's coming and satanic deliverance

*the male child is going to come and strike satan, he will suffer in one way or another, but he will end up judging and ending satan. The child is coming to bring liberation and judgment*

-in 3:15, promise made to the serpant and to the man and the woman
-15:4 promise i saying the child is going to be the head of a great nation. As you progress through history, it becomes more clear and specific (zerah=seed used for the child/heir etc in hebrew)
-in 2 Sam it talks about zerah being God's son and zerah will be his son and he will sit on the throne for all eternity and be a great king...lineage of david. With the judgement it talks about, he will be punished, because he takes on the world's sin and he is suffering for the sake of others and he is beaten with the rods of men, just as the verse says.
-in Isaiah 9 it goes into detail as to what serah is supposed to be ...everlasting father, prince of peace etc.
-in Isaiah 42 is even further developing how the zerah is going to be a suffering servant and is going into more detail about who he will be , as in 53
-in gal paul explains the seed and understands the zerah word and he knows they are talking of the same thing in all the OT verses. The promise he refers to is the promise in Gen 3:15

-and that is redemptive-historic hermeneutic is. going through everything and seeing it unfold through history.

-isaac offering as obidience to Christ....God does that...foreshadowing

-God is the protagonist; he is the main character

-We must remember that this is selective history

-The purpose of God's plan of salvation is the main theme running throughout scripture
-Salvation is not the end of the story! Just as we are saved from something, we are also save to something (or in order to do something).

-inclusio: story begins and ends in the same fashion, or in almost the same sentence.

-they are designed to worship in both settings, the tree of life is in both settings, but then in gen they get kicked out. But it starts with worship and ends with worship. Once they get kicked out, the whole Bible is about how God is going to bring his people back to worship, and that is by sending his son to die and save us and then we are able to go to heaven in the end and it is a life of worship.

-we are saved to worship God and enabled to worship Him.
