1 Samuel 17:1-54: David v Goliath

Observe the text
1. Who is david (read 1 sam 16 too)
2. Who are the philistines and who is goliath?
3. Who does David say he represents in the story?
4. How does david kill Goliath?
5. When Goliath dies, what happens to him (describe what happens from the moment the rock hits him)

Interpret the Text
1. What is the significance about David's identity in this story?
2. In this story, there are two people who represent larger, opposing forces...why is this significant?
3. We are told that Goliath's head is crushed by the rock from David's sling...is there any special significance to this?
4. 1 Sam. 117:49 states that Goliath fell face forward. Does this trike you as off? Can you think of any special significance to this seemingly minute detail? (Hint: look at the larger context of 1 Sam. specifically when the Ark is before the pagan god Dagon.)

-With each different name used, the hypothesis postualtes that his is in fact a reflection of a different author writing that particular section.

- J: the "Yahwiat" (i am that i am, covenant name of God)
- E: the "elohist" (generic god/gods)
- D: the "Deuteronomist" (law)
- P: the "priest" (sacrifice)
